Chosen from results of asking for 'figures hiking with backpacks', I used one of the results as reference when adding the figures to the painting. Remember the days of the 'clip files', when artists would build reference files by clipping images from publications? It is now an app on the phone. Progress.

‘Plein Air Distraction’ entered into the ’24 Central Florida Watercolor Annual Juried Show. 14”x20”, watercolor on Saunders WATERFORD paper.
The challenge was the rendering of the live ‘tumbleweeds.’ I was drawn to the subject by the warm vs. cool colors in the sandstone and foliage along with the long dawn or sunset shadows – you decide.
Using a photo taken in summer, I imagined how it might look on a winter’s day.
Tried this painting on a hot press paper, milled by Saunders. Hot press paper is very smooth. It is milled with smooth hot rollers and the process seals the surface and allows for exceptional color hold out.

My work appears in the March/April ’23 issue of Orlando Arts Magazine promoting the 2023 Central Florida Watercolor Society Annual Show. Painting won First Place Award in this juried event in March 2022.
